The Irish Medical Directory 1873
The Medical Directory for Ireland was published as part of the The Medical Act, 1858 (An Act to Regulate the Qualifications of Practitioners in Medicine and Surgery). The purpose of the act was to identify qualified medical practitioners through the establishment of the Registrar of the General Medical Council. The directory provides the names and locations of medical practitioners and apothecaries (pharmacists) in Ireland.
Prior to publication the entries were sent to the physicians for verification. According to the preface, many doctors did not respond to this request. The first edition was published in in 1852 by John Churchill in London as the Medical Directory for Ireland. It was also published as part of The London & Provincial Medical Directory.
